blank spaces left by mergefields containing no data

I am using Excel 2000 and Word 2000 for mail merge.

The first field on the address line is title, followed by first and last name. In the merged document, however, the first line of the address is indented one space when there is no title.

In the other instance, on line 2 of a directory the mergefields are set up with spaces and or commas followed by a space:
street1(space)street2(comma-space)city(comma-space)ST(space)zip

When the addressee has no street2 in their address, the merged document has an extra space before the comma separating street address from city: STREET1(space-comma-space)CITY(comma-space)ST(space)ZIP.

If I remove the space inserted between the two street mergefields when setting up the merge, there is no extra space before the comma for those without a second street address, but for those with a second address, the two run together..

I have tried to insert spaces at the end of the street1 field in Excel, but it is truncated during the merge.

As for the space created by the title when missing, I cannot think of anything to try to fix it..

Knowledge base searches show how to overcome blanks when there is only one mergefield on a line, but I cannot find anything about what to do when there a several mergefields on a line. I'm lost.

Thank you,
Trudy
