How come Atheists celebrate Halloween if they don't believe spirits/ghosts etc?

  • Halloween is all about evil spirits, magic and all these spiritual things!

you see! they believe in the spiritual world!

  • The celebration renamed Halloween was about seasonal change and honouring the memory's of the dead.

To my knowledge Atheists believe in seasonal change, and many believe in honouring their memories of lost loved ones(not necessarily on Halloween or through ritual).

They may not do this on Halloween, but you are sadly mistaken about it's meaning.

  • Luke 10:18
And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven."

There are two ways of looking at Halloween. Sure, from a Christian
perspective it's not especially great to have the kidlets dressing up as
the devil and whatnot. On the other hand, look at it from the devil's
perspective. You revolted against God and fell from heaven in this
primordial struggle against God Almighty Himself. In your titanic pride you
had high hopes of establishing yourself supreme in the universe. You
committed your greatest act of terrorism against God when you convinced His
own precious Adam and Eve to revolt against Him. You brought death
into the human race and you thought you had it made when God, as it
appeared to you, insanely chose to become human. On Good Friday you finally
had Him in your hand and you killed Him with all the savagery your
fallen angelic mind could invent. And now, for two thousand years, you've
been watching your revolt crumble as the Risen One turned all your
schemes into life for your victims and mockery for you. Now, so far from
ruling the universe, your face is on some stupid mask worn by a
6-year-old and the creatures you hoped to destroy are writing meditations
like this one to pull your pointy nose and remind you that the Christ you
    killed has defeated you utterly.

Memo to Satan: Happy Halloween, loser!

  • Sure, and Easter is about rabbits laying eggs. It's a traditional festival, can't you get over the fact that we do things just for fun without a hidden agenda or meaning behind it?

We also celebrate Christmas, oh noes!

  • Most of us don't believe in the such, but atheism does not mean anything other than lack of belief in gods.. Spirits magic and spiritual things do not mean gods.

But I do celebrate it because it is fun. I'm sure there are a few things that theists can relate to.

  • because we like candy and dressing up

  • We like to party, no belief needed.

  • Is there a rule that says we can't?

Guess what? I may be Atheist, but I believe in ghosts and spirits and magic. There are such things as Spiritual Atheists, btw.

Atheism only means no belief in god/s. By that definition, I qualify.

  • I don't believe in ghosts or this that don't have real scientific evidence to back them up. The TV shows with ghost hunters don't use real scientific evidence. They pretend what they are doing is science and if you don't understand science you will be duped into believing their nonsense.

Every single psychic claim- or supposed proof of a supernatural occurrence that has ever been examined by the worlds leading skeptic Joe Nickell has been proved to be fake or false.

I still love to dress up and have fun though- so whats the problem?

  • First of all, atheists don't *necessarily* disbelieve in spirits or ghosts. I think it's a safe bet that most of us don't believe in them, but "atheist" ONLY means "disbelief in gods." Gods and spirits are not the same thing.

To answer your question directly, we do it for the same reason most of us put up a Christmas tree and give each other presents on December 25th - it's a fun holiday that is far enough removed from religious traditions that we can have a great time spending that time with our friends and family. Modern Christmas celebrations have very little to do with Christianity unless you choose to introduce that aspect by singing hymns, going to church, thinking/talking about Jesus, etc. It's quite simple to just enjoy Christmas as a gift-giving/togetherness holiday without any "Jesus is the reason for the season" jiggery-pokery thrown in. After all, what the heck to trees and nutcrackers have to do with Jesus' birth?

Halloween: Same thing. It's just a time to be goofy, have fun with your loved ones, and celebrate how fun it is to be "scared." I personally do not believe in spirits or ghosts but love celebrating Halloween so much that my husband and I got married on Halloween! It's just a time for kicking back and having a blast.

By the way, in our atheist home we refer to Christmas by its original name of Saturnalia. And instead of an angel of a Star of Bethlehem, the face of Phil Collins tops our Saturnalia tree. :)

  • Because I DO believe in peanut butter cups!

  • Like Christmas it is a holiday many people celebrate primarily in its secular aspects. A time to dress up, have fun assuming a different persona, and having fun. As an atheist I have assumed some of its deeper spiritual aspects from paganism in that I use the holiday to remember those I love who have died. I light a candle and meditate on what they meant to me and how they impacted my life and what I want to pass on that I learned from them. There is no requirement to believe in spirits literally to partake in these aspects or appreciate the holiday.

  • Good way to get really drunk. Pass the spirits!

  • It's called having fun, get over it. I am a fan of Star Wars, doesn't mean I believe in that SHlT, jeez.

  • Halloween is a commercial holiday

  • They believe in candy and kids having fun.

  • Get a life

  • Because it's fun.
What other explanation do you need?

  • So when two and three year olds dress up like princesses and pumpkins and go door to door with their parents to collect candy, that has something to do with ghosts/spirits? Hmmm, strange, that's not the way it was presented to me as a child.

  • Did that spike form when your mother dropped you on your head?

  • Atheists celebrate Halloween not because of their no-belief-system in God but in their belief that candy is for the taste buds and a scary looking outfit is great to see once a year. You see! they believe in a commercial Halloween world! Just like me...Where's my CANDY?!?

  • I don't think they actually believe in all of that, it's just pretend. My daughter dressed up as Blue's Clues once but she knows Blue is just a cartoon character.

  • You make a horrible troll.

  • Halloween is only a fun day . Only ah-souls read anything more into it . Do you Holies have to see religion behind every bush and rock ?
Forget your religious superstitions for a while , and have some fun .
I would hate to be the small son or daughter of one of you gloomy Holies .

  • FREE CANDY!!!

and an excuse to act like a child, and have some fun....

also the hot girls tend to dress skimpy and put on some sort of animal ears....it's hot..

  • Halloween has nothing to do with "evil spirits, magic and all these spiritual things". It is all about the almighty dollar. It is a reason to sell costumes, candy and decorations. Plus, it is just plain fun.

  • For the fun, the sexy outfits, and the booze.

  • I believe in fun, actually. Weak attempt to force your beliefs on us.

  • Why do Christians celebrate Halloween?

  • "Holidays" have been whored-out so much that they barely resemble the intent or characteristics of the original event. Most of them a now more about spending money, getting drunk and having a good time. I do not celebrate Christmas, but my family is Catholic and I attend Christmas dinner with my family- but I myself do not have a tree or decorate. I dress up occasionally with my friends on Halloween, but thats to party and have fun, not to worship mother earth. This in no way changes my beliefs.

Its like getting scared and saying CHRIST ON A CRACKER! This in no way means that I believe in Jesus Christ as my personal savior or that I like crackers. There are plenty of pagan holidays that were used by Christians as the foundations of their holidays that does not make them pagans.

  • Wrong. People do it to have a little fun. And you don't need to believe in imaginary things to do it.

  • How?

Drugs and alcohol... really. It's just another day to party- just like Christmas only with costumes.
