How to stop: updating date on saved correspondance?
I'm using Word with XP. I'm new at this receptionist job and I have been asked to fix a problem...
If a letter is saved, and then later re-opened, the date at the top of the letter automatically changes to today's date. So, if we need to reprint a letter sent in August, it will open and have today's date on it.
ctrl-z doesn't undo it. And, if I open a letter and close it again, it doesn't ask if I'd like to save the changes. And, it's impossible to open a letter and see what day it was composed, unless we were to put the date in the filename or something like that.
How can I stop this from happening? A lot of these letters are correspondance related to legal/trial issues, so having incorrect dates on them could be problematic.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give!
The date in the template that the letter needs to be changed to Create Date. This is the date the letter was created from the template (today's date) and not the date the template was created. If the create date is used, it will not update.

I am talking about letters written by people here, then saved in client files for future reference.
So, you are saying that these letters are generated from a template, and that the template has to be set up to keep the Create Date, rather than insert today's date? I will try to find the template from which people work.
It is likely that I will have further questions, and I hope that I am not *too* annoyingly clueless!
Take your letter document, enter the create date in the format that you want, and save it as a template. (Enter the date by going to Insert/Field/Create Date.) If you have a network, save the template in an area accessible by all users and designate that directory as the directory used for workgroup templates by going to Tools/Options/File locations on each PC and change it to this location. Be aware that if you have 2 templates with the same name, 1 in the user template location and 1 in the workgroup template location, Word will default to the one in the user template location. If you have only the 1 template in the Workgroup location, if you choose to modify it, you only have to change it in 1 location.
People may have inserted the date by going to Insert/Date and Time and left the "Update Automatically" field checked. There is more than one way to skin this cat.
