Is it expensive and time consuming to try to brew my own beer?

  • its not illegal. don't listen to him but time consumingg

  • Its not illegal to brew your own beer or make your own wine ,but I think is illegal to sell it .But its great fun and once you have everything you need its cheap to make . I have been doing it for years ,and make my own beer ,wine ,and Elderberry Port and its better than anything you can buy in the shops .So go ,and enjoy

  • It is not illegal... and after the initial investment in equipment it isn't expensive either. It can be time consuming, however. If you use extracts to brew (kind of like corn syrup... but made out of barley) it doesn't take that long... but brewing from grains can take the better part of an afternoon.

The product is worth it, however... and it is fun!

  • Yes. And, I think it is also illegal.
Wine, too. It used to be called "bootlegging".

  • In my experience it hasn't been expensive at all. It cost be about $65 to get started up. Rather than buying bottles I just collected empties from friends. It's best to use pop-top bottles so find a friend who likes Sam Adams. Once I got the equipment it costs me about $20 to make 66 beers. At about 30 cents a bottle you quickly pay off the initial investment. The downside is that yes, it does take a lot of your time (mostly spent sanitizing equipment). If you're not willing to make the time commitment you should see if there are homebrew stores in your area that will do it for you. It ends up being a little more expensive but it saves tons of time.

  • It is time consuming. Also take into consideration the odors coming from the beer. I wouldn't say expensive. You also need supplies and space.

  • No.

If you've never done it before mabye you would want to check out a BOP
    (brew on premises) place.

  • Brewing your own beer is legal in every state of the US except for Alabama (it's a long story).

Anyways, the initial startup equipment is around $100, plus bottles. You generally brew in 5 gallons at a time, so you produce around 53 bottles (12oz). You can simply clean the bottles you get from beer you're currently buying, and then all you need is the caps and a capping tool.

The cost for the ingredients is around $35 for each 5 gallon batch.

So, you can see that it costs a bit upfront, you're essentially paying around $150 for your 1st batch, or around $19 per 6 pack. But, after that it gets to be just the cost of ingredients, so you're now getting beer for around $4 a 6 pack. You will save money over craft beer pretty quickly, and get stuff which is really limitless in possibility. You can experiment as much as you want, and the quality will be very good. If you're currently buying cheap beer, then you'll get incredible beer for cheaper; might take you longer to save as much over craft beer, but you will save after awhile.

In terms of time, it takes about 3 weeks to produce 5 gallons. Some styles benefit from aging, others are ready to drink at 3 weeks. Homebrew is bottle conditioned, unlike commercial beer which is force carbonated. This means that a newly bottled beer won't be as carbonated as an aged one. Other piece of advice, leave the last 1/4" of beer in the bottle and pour it into a glass slowly. That last 1/4" has all the yeast in it, definetly not what you want to be drinking.
