Is it expensive and time consuming to try to brew my own beer?
The product is worth it, however... and it is fun!
Wine, too. It used to be called "bootlegging".
If you've never done it before mabye you would want to check out a BOP
(brew on premises) place.

Anyways, the initial startup equipment is around $100, plus bottles. You generally brew in 5 gallons at a time, so you produce around 53 bottles (12oz). You can simply clean the bottles you get from beer you're currently buying, and then all you need is the caps and a capping tool.
The cost for the ingredients is around $35 for each 5 gallon batch.
So, you can see that it costs a bit upfront, you're essentially paying around $150 for your 1st batch, or around $19 per 6 pack. But, after that it gets to be just the cost of ingredients, so you're now getting beer for around $4 a 6 pack. You will save money over craft beer pretty quickly, and get stuff which is really limitless in possibility. You can experiment as much as you want, and the quality will be very good. If you're currently buying cheap beer, then you'll get incredible beer for cheaper; might take you longer to save as much over craft beer, but you will save after awhile.
In terms of time, it takes about 3 weeks to produce 5 gallons. Some styles benefit from aging, others are ready to drink at 3 weeks. Homebrew is bottle conditioned, unlike commercial beer which is force carbonated. This means that a newly bottled beer won't be as carbonated as an aged one. Other piece of advice, leave the last 1/4" of beer in the bottle and pour it into a glass slowly. That last 1/4" has all the yeast in it, definetly not what you want to be drinking.
