    Top names in Germany

  • I'm looking for a list of the most popular names (male and female) in Germany. Answers would have to include: - The list of the top 500 and the top 1000 names (male and female) - Detailed statistics: number of population covered by the top 500 names and top 1000 names - Source of the information - A list broke down by age would be a plus Thanks

  • Hello there, Scriptor: So far, I have been able to gather such information from statistic institutes or social security bureau of France and UK. So, such lists do exist at least in these two countries. I'm not familiar with the German language and that's probably where I need help ;-) Pafalafa: Thanks for the link but this name list is a little short ;-) Thanks for your help Regards, Phoboscausa

  • Dear Phoboscausa, First, I would like to say that I am German (so you know I'm not making up things). Then, back to your question. Germany is very different from France and the United Kingdom. Those are highly centralized countries, while Germany is a federation of 16 states with many competencies being with those states instead of Federal agencies. So finding national statistics on certain topics is much more complicated in Germany. Sometimes, they don't even exist, or at least they are not published. This leads to a second point: Germany still suffers from the old Prussian arrogance of goverment agencies towards the citizens. Much less statistical data than in other European countries is published, mainly not for reasons of securtity, but simply because of a "That's none of your business, little citizen"-attitude. And the third problem are the strict privacy laws. Agencies collecting personal data (for example, all Germans have an ID card, so their data is collected) are usually not allowed to analyze their records for statistics. I have never seen detailed national statistics on first names, and I am sure that such statistics do not exist. But maybe one of my colleagues can prove me wrong. I hope it. Regards, Scriptor

  • Hi Scriptor, Ok, thanks for your clarification. Phoboscausa

  • Dear phoboscausa, I strongly doubt that such a list exists anywhere. There is no national agency collecting and publishing data of this kind in Germany. Although regulated by Federal laws, names are mainly under the responsibility of the countless local civil register offices, with no centralized analysis. All lists of the most popular first names are based upon data voluntarily contributed by only a small number of civil register offices. Regards, Scriptor

  • There is this list, at least, although it's a bit shy of the Top 1000: http://www.gfds.de/namen.html
