What is the best type of wood to build a super strong TV Cabinet?
Thanks in advance
It has a lot more to the design and frame type and quality of construction. That is to say it does not matter what timber you use, if you do not understand the principles of construction and fabrication, then the less chance of a sturdy product.
I have recently built TV cabinets out of stained pine and hardwood (stringy bark ) flooring. also solid blue gum, spotted gum and oregon (douglas fur), the point being, it depends on :
1. What you prefer in the finish
2. What is available or can afford.
3. Which materials are you familiar with to work.
4. The type of finish you require.
5. How much time and effort are you prepared to spend on the project.
6. Do you have the necessary tools and equipment needed.
These may get the grey-matter working, next you will have to design your project, including working drawings and sized parts and joints.
Will you use half scarf joints , dowelled or mortice and tennon ( my preferred method ). Glue, screw, nailed?
Having said all this, my advise as to strength and durability would be one of our hardwoods, being to check out with your local timber supplier as to availability and sizes.
Use glued mortice and tennon joints for the framework, recessed panels, glued and scewed. With a press jointed, glued hardwood, laminated top. Stained to your choice of colour and finish.
Hope this has helped.
